Unpacking Biodigester Performance, Benefits & Co-Digestion Potential

The African Biodigester Component – Kenya (ABC-K), in partnership with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), hosted a Knowledge Sharing Workshop on 27th May 2025, at the ILRI campus along Naivasha Road, Nairobi.

Bringing together leading scientists, county government representatives from Isiolo, Embu and Kisumu, and clean energy stakeholders, the event was anchored on new research findings on biodigester performance, socio-economic impacts, and the promising potential of co-digestion using mixed organic feedstock.

The workshop featured insightful presentations and live demonstrations, including:

• Methane potential of feedstocks like slaughterhouse waste, fish waste, manure, and biowaste.

• Socio-economic benefits of biodigesters at household level from field research in Nandi County.

• A field visit to Napier grass trials at ILRI showcasing the effects of bioslurry and other inputs on feed quality, soil health, and greenhouse gas emissions.
