Welcome to the African Biodigester Component Kenya Platform ("Platform", "we", "our", or "us"). Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit and interact with our platform at abc.kenyabiogas.com, in accordance with applicable Kenyan data protection laws, including the Data Protection Act, 2019 and regulations issued thereunder by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC).

The Platform is operated by the African Biodigester Component (ABC) Kenya — a programme funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS), the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), and the European Union (EU), and implemented by GIZ and SNV in cooperation with Africa Bioenergy Programs Limited (ABPL).

By using this Platform you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with its terms, please discontinue use of the Platform.

1. Information We Collect

We may collect the following categories of information:

a) Contact Form Data

When you submit an enquiry through our contact form, we collect your name, email address, and the content of your message. This information is used solely to respond to your enquiry.

b) Biodigester Ownership Verification & Rating (GreenMap)

The GreenMap feature allows biodigester owners to verify ownership of and submit ratings for their installations. When you use this feature we collect:

  • Your first name and last name (matched against installation records).
  • Your mobile phone number (last 9 digits are used for verification matching; full number is not stored from this form).
  • Technical metadata to assist fraud prevention, including: IP address, browser User-Agent string, device platform and type, screen resolution, hardware concurrency, device memory, browser language preferences, and timezone.
  • The date and time of the verification or rating action.
  • Acceptance of our Terms and Conditions at the time of submission.

This data is held against the biodigester installation record and is accessible only to authorised ABC Kenya administrators. It is used exclusively for the purpose of fraud detection and programme data integrity.

c) Technical and Usage Data

When you browse the Platform, our web server and application may automatically log standard technical information including your IP address, browser type, pages visited, date and time of access, and the referring URL. This is used for security monitoring, performance optimisation, and aggregate analytics only.

d) Cookies and Session Data

We use strictly necessary session cookies to support the secure operation of the Platform (for example, the Django session and CSRF token). We do not currently use advertising or profiling cookies. If you use the admin portal, additional authentication cookies may be set. You can manage cookie preferences through your browser settings; however, disabling session cookies may impair certain features.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use collected information to:

  • Respond to contact form enquiries.
  • Verify biodigester ownership and process ratings submitted through the GreenMap.
  • Detect and prevent fraudulent or unauthorised verification submissions.
  • Maintain the security, integrity, and performance of the Platform.
  • Generate aggregate, anonymised statistics for programme reporting.
  • Comply with applicable legal obligations.

We do not use your personal data for automated individual decision-making or profiling as defined under the Data Protection Act, 2019.

3. Sharing of Information

We do not sell your personal data. We may share your information with:

  • Programme consortium partners (GIZ, SNV, ABPL) for oversight, reporting, and quality assurance purposes, under equivalent data protection obligations.
  • Technical service providers engaged to operate or maintain the Platform (e.g. hosting, media storage via ImageKit), subject to data processing agreements.
  • Regulatory or law enforcement authorities if required to do so by applicable law or a lawful order.

Any third-party processors are required to handle your data only as instructed by us and in accordance with applicable data protection law.

4. Data Retention

Contact form messages are retained for the period necessary to resolve your enquiry and for a reasonable period thereafter for record-keeping purposes. Biodigester verification and rating records are retained for the duration of the programme and any legally required retention period. Technical logs are retained for up to 90 days unless a security incident requires longer retention. We will delete or anonymise your data once it is no longer required for the purpose for which it was collected.

5. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or loss. These include HTTPS encryption in transit, access controls limiting sensitive verification data to authorised administrators, and application-level security measures. However, no method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Your Rights

Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to:

  • Be informed about how your personal data is being processed.
  • Access a copy of your personal data held by us.
  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
  • Request deletion of your personal data (subject to legal retention obligations).
  • Object to or request restriction of processing in certain circumstances.
  • Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.
  • Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) at www.odpc.go.ke.
